Haiku : fall

cactus don’t change hues

haiku by M. Nakazato LaFreniere

I took the photo in Oakland decades ago where leaves change colors come fall.  Reds, yellows, oranges, and browns carpet the ground.  Here in Arizona, not much changes.  The cactus is still an insipid green except not the wild grass around it has died to shades of brown.  Although everywhere I do see the red fruit jutting out on the pear cactus.  Would it be rude to pick some out of someone’s yard?

This year I didn’t weed to see what would come up.  I now have my own pear cactus growing.  Two paddles now.  If it survives the winter, maybe next year I will have my own fruit.  I think I have a few trees too growing — one palo verde and two palms trees.  We shall see.  If that’s what they are, I’ll have to move them come spring.
