1872 photograph by Julia Margaret Cameron. “King Lear allotting his Kingdom to his three daughters.” Sitters are Marina Liddell, Edith Liddell, Charles Hay Cameron and Alice Liddell.

Alice Lidell inspired Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass. When she was 10, on a boat with her sisters (Edith and Lorina) and Charles Dodgson aka Lewis Carroll, she asked Dodgson to tell them a story.  He told them the story of Alice.   She asked him to make it into a book for her which he did but also sent the manuscript to a publisher.
