I just watched an interesting you-tube video of 10 inventions by Da Vinci including a robot!

Hmmm.  I copied and pasted the url from Youtube and it popped the video right into my post!  I didn’t know it could do that.  Wow.  Anyways enjoy “Awesome Inventions by Leonardo Da Vinci” by Origins explained.

In the video, they talked about a sketch of a parachute that Da Vinci did. The parachute was not made until 2000 when Katarina Ollikainen built it using materials available during Da Vinci’s time and place.  Adrian Nichols, daredevil skydriver, used it to drop 7,000 feet saying it was a smoother ride than modern parachutes.  You can watch the making of the Da Vinci’s parachute and Nichol’s descent video here.

Image 2: Top half of the photograph. Building the robot of Leonardo da Vinci in the laboratories of Leonardo3 Milan, Italy. 2007. The robot will be used in the exhibitions of Mexico, Milan, San Francisco and New York, 2007. Photo in the Leonardo3 Laboratories. Photo author: Leonardo3 – Mario Taddei.  From Wikimedia.

Note about the photo.  A working robot was created from Da Vinci sketchbooks. In 1957, “Carlo Pedretti was the first to discover the tell-tale fragments of Leonardo’s Robot Knight in the Codex Atlanticus.” from Leonardo’s Lost Robots.  Since then, the sketches have been used as blueprints by roboticist Mark Elling Rosheim to create a working robot.  It is generally held that Da Vinci himself made a working copy in 1495 for a Milano celebration. Image 3: Aerial Screw (I used the middle 1/3 and flipped it due to the mirror writing) A kind of prehelicoptor, can’t fly. They didn’t have materials light enough at the time.  Also it was based on manpower which isn’t enough for airlift — needed the invention of engines first.   The most important thing about it though was that he invented the ball bearing to reduce friction. ” Air screw is a drawing Ms B 83v by Leonardo da Vinci 1486-1490.
