Haiku : Love

you, grumpy dragon
sarcasm and cigarettes —
a kiss, shooting stars

haiku by M. Nakazato LaFreniere

He had just come in from a stakeout. A divorce case. He hated them. Sleazy work but it paid the bills. He hadn’t even put his good hat back on when she walked through the door looking like trouble. He knew he shouldn’t take her case but knew he would. Didn’t even matter what it was about. A friend had once laughed at him, called him a knight in rusty armor. Yep, sarcasm and a barely disguised sense of chivalry stacked against a smart-mouthed widow who despite her tough veneer still exuded an ethereal vulnerability. Top that off with ruby lips that made him think… “Name is Spade, Sam Spade. What’cha need?” he said roughly, not even bothering to put down his cigarette, snorting smoke through his nostrils like a grumpy dragon.

On Carpe Diem Haiku Kai, Chèvrefeuille posited a poem:

“Love is an act of faith and its face should always be covered in mystery. Every moment should be lived with feeling and emotion because if we try to decipher it and understand it, the magic disappears.” […] (Source: Paulo Coelho – The Spy)

The quote is from Coelho’s book on Mata Hari, a WWI spy, and we are challenged to write a haiku love poem.    Starring Humphrey Bogart as Sam Spade, The Maltese Falcon, based on Dashiell Hammett’s mystery,  came out in 1941 during WWII.   Here’s to those of us who love the grumpy dragons, with sharp wits and a surprising laugh. Lifts a glass.
