Daily Haiku / Senryu : Pamper

mind focused, writing
suddenly a claw taps me
“pamper me,” cat says

haiku by M. Nakazato LaFreniere

Midnight sometimes jumps up on the chair next to me.  Lightly extending his claws, he’ll tap me gently on the leg to catch my attention when he wants me to pet him.  Having enough, he’ll jump down, curl up on my feet and take a nap.

Photograph by myself, using a Nikon D3400, automatic focus and flash.  Really hard to take Midnight’s photo as he keeps moving his head.  He is affectionate, wanting to be caressed, hand running down his fur; not photographed.  He loves the camera strap; his head dipping down as his paw swings at the strap.

Note on Senryu: Senryu actually has a long history of political activism — one of the reasons it was published anonymously because some of the things the poems reported could get you imprisoned or your head chopped off.  This is a nod to those antecedents.

Grandbaby Cakes

I couldn’t resist looking up the cake cookbooks on Amazon.  Food porn!  laughing.  I also found one called Grandbaby Cakes.  Turns out, the Grandbaby Cakes blog writer, Jocelyn, learned baking from her grandmom.  Her latest recipe, Crispy Skillet Garlic Chicken, looks to die for. I have got to try it.

From Amazon, some random Arizona sunset things I saw.  Sometimes Amazon surprises me with the breadth of things on its site.  Who knew they had Arizona license plates?  I still remember when they only sold books (omg! that totally dates me!). I had expected to find a coffee book on Arizona sunsets but no go. Instead, I found the unavailable “Volcanoes of Arizona: San Francisco Peaks, Sunset Crater, San Francisco Volcanic Field, Uinkaret Volcanic Field, Mount Elden, Humphreys Peak”. I had no clue Arizona had volcanoes. So throwing up my hands, I looked for Arizona photography books. I love the Arizona Highways magazine so that was an easy choice. The how-to wildflower one reminded me I need to get out more and shoot some photos.

umami flavor
taste named in 1908
whatever. yummy!
          haiku by M. Nakazato Lafreniere

Umami is now a word describing the taste meaty or savory.  Scientifically legitimized in the 1980s as the fifth taste, umami  stars such foods as tomatoes, mushrooms, parmesan and beans that have a rich meaty taste.  Oh, and MSG too.  So now you know why your mom used to sprinkle it on everything.
