Senryu : bang bang

bang bang my baby
the sound explodes in the fog
secret’s bloody end

I’ve been doing a lot of poems without pics.  Does it matter?  Do you like it better with pics? Or are just the words fine?

I guess I’m thinking because I’d like to do e-books but to me I feel like the images and poems go together.  However some of the free ebook apps seem to be exporting text straight from word and pics may have problems with them unless you create the book in adobe indesign which I don’t have.  I really don’t like not having control over how a picture gets imported in and shows.

anyways just would love your two cents.

  1. Pics are not necessary. Poems should evoke a scene by themselves. How many chapbooks, published prose or collections have pictures for every entry? Few.

    1. Thank you for answering. I appreciate it. It’s good to know maybe just text might be ok. I think I might do the first one at least in all text just to learn the process of creating an ebook. Maybe the story ones first I’m thinking in between the designing and everything else i’m learning. hmmm, I think I’ve the mind of a hummingbird, flitting from this to that — at least they are all related.

    1. Thank you for answering. I appreciate it. I like the pics too — gives me a chance to share them. I think I’ll do the first book as all text to learn how to create an ebook. The apps make it sound easy but from past experience, there is always something that makes it a little more difficult then expected. And then the second one, do it with pics.

    1. Cool. I like that answer. I think I’ll do the first ebook as a text only to see how the process goes and to simplify things. The second one maybe half and half.

    1. Thank you for answering. i appreciate it. I’m happy the pictures work with the poems. First book I’ll go just text to learn and then second one do both pics and poems.

  2. As soon as I saw your email in my inbox and read the poem, I thought of Cher’s song. Came over to the post and as I was scrolling down, there’s a video with the song. Pretty cool!

I agree with texshelters and shutterbug.

    1. I love that song too. My dad used to love Sonny and Cher so I had a soft spot for them. I loved her songs. When she went solo, I loved her songs like Gypsies, Tramps and Thieves. She just had a great voice. She looked so young in that video!

Thanks for giving me the feedback on the pics and text for ebooks. As I said in my reply to them, i think the first book will be all text to learn how to make them and then the second one learn how to bring text in — I may have to rent Indesign for a month so I’d like the text part to go pretty easily by then. It’s great to know they work together or seperately so it makes choosing much easier.

      1. I was THE biggest Sonny and Cher fan. One Christmas I got tickets to see them live…David Brenner was the opening act. I had a great night with my parents. Love Gypsies, Tramps and Things! Here’s how much I loved them…I gave up going to Disney World when it was still pretty new to stay home and watch their tv show. 😂

        1. That is so awesome that you got to see them live. I saw Cher once in Las Vegas. She is an amazing singer — and she really changes her costumes a lot! Our whole family used to gather round to watch that show. wow, you were a big fan to give up Disney World for their show.

          1. I’ve never seen Cher by herself. Seeing her in Vegas must have been a real treat. I think the rest of my family watched their show mostly because of me…we only had one t.v.

            1. It was! She knows how to put on a good show and I love her voice. We were a little far back but we still had a good view of the stage.

My family only had one tv back then too so we all watched Sonny & Cher together. Luckily my dad liked them too as we usually watched what he liked at night. Daytime the tv choices were all ours. My dad liked Star Trek and was my intro into science fiction. Although I do remember I was only 7 when I watched the episode where kids were healthy and all the adults got these strange growths and died — scared me silly back then.

    1. Thank you! I appreciate your feedback as always. I hadn’t realize that the images add a layer of meaning to the poem so that’s very cool.

hope you’re having a great weekend

  3. Control is the key… often we just don’t have it.
I like with and without. I don’t understand that with all the technology that we can’t do it all.
But then how would the other companies stay in business? 🙂

    I remember that Cher song…

    1. I like control over my creative stuff like how an image prints out. With POD (purchase on demand) when you upload your design and then they sell it on stuff and handle the manufacturing, it’s a bit tough because you don’t have control. You just have to hope they have an eye towards quality. Also I’m finding out technology effects things — like a printer ink is a bit different than t-shirt inks. So t-shirts print differently than paper so you have to learn to adjust. Problem is it’s cheap to adjust for paper — having to do it per t-shirt, not so much so I just do the best I can on the first one.

I think that song kinds of sticks in the memory.
